North East based band Horovod perform arrangements of dance music from the Balkans, Turkey and Greece.
The group grew out of a shared interest in the music of these places, after the clarinettist Dov Goldberg overheard violinist Morag Brown practising Greek music between teaching lessons. Added to the sound was Lewis Powell-Reid on accordion, Frazer Watson on percussion and Tony Abell on double bass.
Horovod played at the Hexham Festival of Music and Arts in 2016, the Holy Island Festival and Alnwick International Music Festival in 2017, the Bundibar Arts Festival in 2016 and 2017 organised by members of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, and gave a lunchtime performance this year at the Newcastle University Live Music Series.
Horovod create a rich blend of melody and harmony and perform Balkan, Greek, Turkish and klezmer music with flair and energy. Expect frantic Bulgarian dance rhythms, meditative melodic improvisations, stomping klezmer freilachs and everything in between.
As well as their evening concert, Horovod will give an interactive Family Concert at 3.00pm in the Hall on a ‘pay what you think it’s worth’ basis.
